A friend once asked a passerby for directions to a famous landmark.

I remember their response every time I begin a new strategic assignment:

Well, if I wanted to go there, I certainly wouldn’t start from here…

You rarely start any task from the best possible position.

But it’s much easier to get to where you want through planning than it is to get there by chance.

Always start by working out where you’re going, and how you’re going to get there.

You can update things as you go along, but starting off in the right direction will save a lot of time and effort.
